France's political chaos EXPLAINED fast with key French vocabulary

Summer's slowly drawing to a close, back to school is just around the corner and life in France is about to get back to normal. But this September is going to be a special one, especially from a political point of view. Welcome to a new episode of Learn French vocabulary with the news!

After the Olympics

In the last episode, I told you about the happiness of the French at the Olympic Games. Ah, they were so happy, but that's all in the past now! France is sinking into a political quagmire with new risks of deadlock.

Let me sum it up for you. Following a setback at the European elections in June, Emmanuel Macron decided to dissolve the government, i.e., call new legislative elections to renew the national assembly. Nothing forced him to do so, but he did, with all the risks that this entailed: a fragmentation and rotting of political life.

Current situation

Since July, France no longer really has a government. The National Assembly has no absolute majority. And that's why everyone is exasperated with the President, who is accused of wanting to short-circuit the parties. On the front pages of the newspapers, expressions with far-reaching consequences are beginning to appear, such as chaos, illiberal drift or impeachment, which are being used more and more.

History repeats itself?

Some see in Macron a new MacMahon, the president of the late 19th century, who had to resign because he found himself in a somewhat similar situation: institutional gridlock. But as the saying goes, “comparison is not reason”, meaning that we should always be wary of making comparisons, especially when they concern different historical periods.

Calls for a general strike have already been made, the parties are splitting up more and more, and the constitutional crisis is escalating. In short, it's not all good news. It's what the newspapers are talking about morning and night "France political chaos", and it's going to continue for a long time.
